The myelin sheath is a protective layer that surrounds the axons of neurons. First, its primary function is to facilitate the rapid transmission of nerve impulses. Thanks to its composition, it optimizes the speed and efficiency of electrical conduction.

It is composed mainly of lipids and specialized proteins. Because of this structure, it acts as an electrical insulator around the axon. Consequently, it reduces current loss during the propagation of the nerve impulse.

Moreover, myelin enables saltatory conduction. In other words, the nerve impulse travels between the nodes of Ranvier. Therefore, the signal moves much faster than in unmyelinated axons.

In the central nervous system, myelin is produced by oligodendrocytes. In contrast, in the peripheral nervous system, it is formed by Schwann cells. Thus, different cell types are responsible for its formation and maintenance.

Furthermore, the integrity of the myelin sheath is essential for proper nervous system function. When this structure is damaged, nerve transmission becomes slow or inefficient. As a result, motor, sensory, or cognitive disturbances may appear.
