Dental dentin is one of the main tissues that make up the internal structure of the tooth. This mineralized tissue lies beneath the enamel in the crown and beneath the cementum in the root. It forms the largest portion of the tooth and surrounds the pulp chamber, which contains blood vessels and nerves responsible for maintaining tooth vitality. Because of its structural properties, dentin provides strength and support during chewing.

From a microscopic perspective, dentin contains a network of tiny channels known as dentinal tubules. These tubules extend from the pulp toward the outer regions of the tooth. Inside them are cellular extensions of odontoblasts, the cells responsible for producing and maintaining dentin tissue.

Dentin can be classified into several types depending on its origin and function. Primary dentin forms during tooth development and represents the majority of the dentin structure surrounding the dental pulp.

Over time, teeth gradually produce secondary dentin, sometimes referred to as physiological dentin. This type develops slowly throughout life and gradually reduces the size of the pulp chamber as part of the natural aging process.

When the tooth experiences irritation or injury, such as dental caries or trauma, the pulp may generate reparative dentin. This defensive response helps protect the inner tissues of the tooth from further damage.

In addition to these functional categories, dentin also includes different structural components. Peritubular dentin surrounds the dentinal tubules, while intertubular dentin occupies the space between them. This microscopic organization contributes to the strength and resilience of the tooth.
