This tissue is composed of pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. Moreover, it contains ciliated cells and goblet cells, which play important roles in respiratory defense.

Goblet cells produce mucus, a sticky substance that traps dust particles, microorganisms, and other substances present in inhaled air. In this way, mucus acts as a protective barrier.

Meanwhile, ciliated cells possess small hair-like structures called cilia. These cilia move in a coordinated way and push the mucus toward the upper airways.

This mechanism is known as mucociliary transport. As a result, trapped particles can be removed from the respiratory system before reaching the lungs.

Furthermore, the respiratory epithelium also helps humidify and warm the air entering the body. This function is important because dry or cold air could damage lung tissues.

Afterward, air continues its path toward the bronchioles and finally reaches the pulmonary alveoli, where gas exchange occurs between air and blood.

During this process, oxygen moves into the blood capillaries, while carbon dioxide is removed from the body during exhalation.
