The layers of the stomach form the structure of the gastric wall and allow the proper functioning of the digestive system. First, the stomach is a muscular organ involved in the digestion of food. In addition, its wall is composed of several layers that work together to process food.

The innermost layer is the gastric mucosa. This layer contains gastric glands that produce gastric acid, mucus, and digestive enzymes. Because of these substances, food begins to break down chemically inside the stomach.

Below the mucosa lies the submucosa, a layer made of connective tissue containing blood vessels, nerves, and glands. Moreover, this layer provides structural support and helps regulate gastric secretions.

Next is the muscular layer or muscularis externa. This layer consists of smooth muscle fibers arranged in different directions. Therefore, it allows the stomach to perform mixing and churning movements.

Through these contractions, food mixes with gastric juices and becomes a semi-liquid substance called chyme. Afterward, chyme gradually moves into the small intestine, where digestion continues.

Finally, the outermost layer is the serosa, which forms part of the visceral peritoneum. In addition, this layer protects the stomach and allows smooth movement within the abdominal cavity.

Likewise, each of these layers performs a specific role in digestion. While the mucosa produces digestive substances, the muscular layer enables the movement and mixing of food.
