The anatomy of the lungs and bronchi is a fundamental part of the respiratory system. First, these structures allow air to move through the body. In addition, they make possible the gas exchange required to sustain life.
The lungs are two spongy organs located in the chest cavity on each side of the heart. Moreover, they are protected by the rib cage and separated by the mediastinum. Their main function is to allow oxygen to enter the blood and carbon dioxide to be removed.
Air reaches the lungs through the bronchi, which are airways that originate from the trachea. Then, the trachea divides into two main bronchi, one for each lung.
Afterward, each main bronchus branches into secondary bronchi, which spread through different regions of the lungs. Next, these branches continue dividing into smaller passages.
Later, they form the bronchioles, which are very small tubes responsible for distributing air within the lungs. In this way, air can reach every part of the lungs.
Finally, the bronchioles carry air to the pulmonary alveoli, which are tiny air sacs. In these sacs, gas exchange occurs between air and blood.
During this process, oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood capillaries. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli.
Afterward, carbon dioxide leaves the body during exhalation. Therefore, the lungs and bronchi work together to ensure efficient breathing.
