The bronchi originate when the trachea divides into two main airways. Then, each main bronchus enters one lung and branches into smaller passages. In this way, air can be distributed throughout the lung tissue.

Afterward, the bronchi branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles. Unlike the bronchi, bronchioles do not contain hyaline cartilage in their walls. Instead, they are mainly surrounded by smooth muscle fibers, which regulate airflow.
Finally, the bronchioles carry air to the pulmonary alveoli. In these tiny air sacs, gas exchange occurs between air and blood.
During this process, oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood capillaries, while carbon dioxide moves in the opposite direction.
