The colon is an essential part of the digestive system, as it plays a key role in absorbing water and electrolytes. Therefore, it transforms waste into feces before elimination. It is divided into several sections: the cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon.

First, the cecum receives content from the small intestine. Then, the ascending colon transports waste upward along the right side of the abdomen. Next, the transverse colon crosses the abdominal cavity horizontally. After that, the descending colon moves downward on the left side. Finally, the sigmoid colon connects to the rectum.

In addition, the colon has specific anatomical features such as the taeniae coli, haustra, and epiploic appendages. These structures facilitate the movement and compaction of intestinal contents. Consequently, they allow proper formation of feces.

On the other hand, the intestinal microbiota plays an essential role in the colon. Indeed, it helps ferment undigested residues. It also contributes to the production of vitamins, such as vitamin K.
