During breathing, inhaled air travels from the trachea to the bronchi. Then, the bronchi branch into bronchioles that distribute air throughout the lungs.
Afterward, bronchioles carry air to the alveoli, where gas exchange takes place between air and blood.
During this process, oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood capillaries. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli.
Later, carbon dioxide leaves the body during exhalation. Therefore, the anatomy of the bronchiole helps regulate airflow and supports the breathing process.
