Anatomy of the mammary lobes. The mammary lobes are an essential part of the internal structure of the mammary glands. First of all, these lobes represent the glandular units responsible for milk production. In addition, they are arranged within the breast tissue in a radial pattern around the nipple.

Each breast usually contains 15 to 20 mammary lobes. Furthermore, each lobe is divided into smaller structures known as lobules. Inside these lobules are the alveoli, which produce milk during breastfeeding. Therefore, mammary lobes play a key role in the nourishment of newborns.

The alveoli are composed of specialized secretory cells. These cells respond to hormones such as prolactin and oxytocin. During lactation, these hormones stimulate milk production and release. Afterwards, the milk flows from the alveoli into the lactiferous ducts.

The lactiferous ducts function as transport channels. In fact, they carry milk from the lobules toward the nipple. Near the nipple, the ducts expand to form the lactiferous sinuses. These small reservoirs temporarily store milk before it exits the breast.

In addition to glandular tissue, the breast also contains adipose tissue and connective tissue. On the one hand, adipose tissue influences the size and shape of the breast. On the other hand, connective tissue supports the mammary lobes and maintains structural stability.

The anatomy of mammary lobes changes throughout life. For example, puberty triggers the development of glandular tissue. Likewise, during pregnancy the lobules increase in size and number. As a result, the breast prepares for milk production.

After breastfeeding ends, part of the glandular tissue gradually decreases. However, the overall organization of the lobes remains. For this reason, understanding the anatomy of the mammary lobes is important in medical studies.
