The bronchi are the two main airways that originate from the trachea. Then, each bronchus enters one lung. From there, they divide into smaller and smaller branches.

Afterward, these branches form the bronchioles, which distribute the inhaled air throughout the lungs. As a result, air reaches all lung regions.

At the ends of the bronchioles are the pulmonary alveoli. These structures are tiny air sacs with extremely thin walls. Moreover, they are surrounded by a dense network of blood capillaries.

Because of this structure, gas exchange occurs efficiently. First, oxygen from the inhaled air moves from the alveoli into the bloodstream.

Meanwhile, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli. Afterward, this gas leaves the body during exhalation.

Furthermore, the lungs contain millions of alveoli, which greatly increase the surface area available for gas exchange. Therefore, the body can obtain enough oxygen to maintain its vital functions.

Likewise, the bronchi direct air toward the areas where respiration takes place. In this way, every part of the lung participates in breathing.
