Schlemm’s Canal Detail: Structure and Role in Aqueous Humor Drainage. Schlemm’s canal is a key structure in the eye’s drainage system. It is located at the angle of the anterior chamber, where the cornea meets the iris. In addition, this canal plays a crucial role in regulating intraocular pressure by allowing aqueous humor to leave the eye.

First, aqueous humor is a transparent fluid produced by the ciliary bodies. This fluid circulates through the front part of the eye and performs several essential functions. For example, it provides nutrients and oxygen to avascular structures such as the cornea and the lens. Furthermore, it helps maintain the shape and stability of the eyeball.

After being produced, aqueous humor flows from the posterior chamber through the pupil into the anterior chamber. Then, the fluid circulates between the cornea and the iris, where it nourishes tissues and removes metabolic waste.

To maintain proper intraocular pressure, the fluid must be continuously drained. Primarily, drainage occurs through the trabecular meshwork, a filtration tissue located at the iridocorneal angle. This structure regulates the outflow of aqueous humor.

Once filtered, the fluid enters Schlemm’s canal, a circular channel that surrounds the base of the cornea. Next, aqueous humor passes through collector channels that transport it to the venous drainage system.

Through this drainage process, intraocular pressure remains balanced. However, if the outflow of aqueous humor becomes reduced or blocked, pressure inside the eye may increase.

Elevated intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve. As a result, this condition is associated with glaucoma, a disease that may lead to progressive vision loss.
