Meanwhile, during exhalation, the lungs contract and release carbon dioxide. Therefore, the pleura helps maintain the natural movement of the lungs.

Furthermore, the pulmonary pleura also has a protective role. For example, it keeps the lungs properly positioned within the chest. Likewise, it helps prevent lung collapse.

The pleural fluid also plays an important role because it reduces friction between the pleural layers. For this reason, breathing movements occur efficiently.
