First, the eardrum, also known as the tympanic membrane, is located in the middle ear. This thin membrane separates the outer ear from the middle ear.

When sound waves travel through the ear canal, they reach the eardrum. As a result, the membrane begins to vibrate in response to these waves.

These vibrations represent the first step in the hearing process. In addition, the eardrum transfers the vibrations to the auditory ossicles in the middle ear.

Afterward, the vibrations move toward the inner ear. There we find an important structure called the cochlea.

The cochlea has a spiral shape that resembles a small snail shell. This structure plays a central role in the hearing process.

Inside the cochlea lies the organ of Corti, a highly specialized structure. This organ contains sensory cells known as hair cells.

The hair cells respond to the mechanical vibrations of sound. When activated, they convert these vibrations into electrical signals.

These signals then travel through the auditory nerve to the brain. The brain interprets this information as recognizable sounds.

Therefore, the interaction between the eardrum and the cochlea is essential for hearing. Both structures work together to transform sound waves into neural information.
