The layers of the bronchial wall are an essential part of the anatomy of the bronchi in the respiratory system. First, the bronchi are airways that carry air from the trachea into the lungs. In addition, their structure consists of several layers that keep the airways open and protected.
The innermost layer is the bronchial mucosa. This layer is composed of ciliated respiratory epithelium and connective tissue. Moreover, the cilia help move mucus and trapped particles toward the upper airways.

Another important layer is composed of hyaline cartilage. This cartilage appears as plates or incomplete rings that help keep the bronchial structure open.
Finally, the outer layer is the adventitia, which consists of connective tissue. This layer connects the bronchi with surrounding lung structures and provides support.
During breathing, inhaled air travels from the trachea into the bronchi. Then, these airways branch into bronchioles, which carry air toward the pulmonary alveoli.
Inside the alveoli, gas exchange occurs between air and blood. Here, oxygen moves into the blood capillaries, while carbon dioxide is removed.
