On the other hand, bronchioles are the smallest airways of the bronchial tree. Unlike bronchi, bronchioles do not contain cartilage in their walls. Instead, they are surrounded by smooth muscle, which helps regulate airflow within the lungs.
Finally, bronchioles end in the alveoli, where gas exchange takes place. In these small air sacs, oxygen enters the bloodstream while carbon dioxide is removed during exhalation.
