On the other hand, bronchioles end in tiny air sacs called alveoli. Within these structures, gas exchange occurs. Oxygen passes into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide is removed from the body during exhalation.

Moreover, the lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. These spongy organs are located inside the thoracic cavity and are protected by the rib cage. In addition, the lungs contain millions of alveoli that create a large surface area for efficient gas exchange.
