On the other hand, a large portion of breast lymphatic drainage flows toward the axillary lymph nodes, located in the armpit region. In fact, these nodes receive most of the lymph coming from breast tissue. Additionally, another portion of lymphatic drainage may reach the internal mammary lymph nodes, located near the sternum.
Likewise, a small amount of lymph may travel toward lymph nodes near the clavicle. As a result, the lymphatic system of the breasts connects different regions of the body. Consequently, this connection allows the immune system to respond more effectively.
From a medical perspective, the breast lymphatic system is very important. For example, in the diagnosis of breast cancer, specialists analyze nearby lymph nodes. This happens because cancer cells may spread through lymphatic vessels.
In particular, the sentinel lymph node is often the first node to receive lymph from a tumor. For this reason, examining this node helps detect possible cancer spread. Finally, understanding the lymphatic system of the breasts supports the study of breast anatomy and improves early disease detection.
