Molars have a complex anatomy adapted to their chewing function. Each molar is composed of several structural layers. The outermost layer is tooth enamel, the hardest tissue in the human body. Enamel protects the tooth from mechanical wear produced during chewing and from chemical substances present in foods and beverages.

Beneath the enamel lies dentin, a mineralized tissue that forms most of the tooth structure. Dentin provides strength and internal support to the dental crown. It also contains microscopic channels called dentinal tubules, which connect with the pulp tissue.

At the center of the tooth is the dental pulp, a soft tissue containing blood vessels and nerve fibers. The pulp maintains tooth vitality and allows the tooth to detect sensory stimuli such as pressure and temperature.

The chewing surface of molars contains several cusps, which are raised areas on the crown of the tooth. These structures allow efficient grinding of food during mastication. Because of their design, molars are highly effective in crushing food before it enters the digestive system.

Molar roots extend into the jawbone and provide structural stability. These roots are connected to the alveolar bone by the periodontal ligament, a fibrous tissue that supports the tooth and absorbs chewing forces.

The gingiva surrounds the cervical area of the tooth and protects the deeper periodontal tissues. Healthy gums help prevent bacterial invasion and maintain overall oral health.
