Normal aqueous humor drainage describes the circulation of aqueous humor, a transparent fluid located in the anterior portion of the eye. This fluid plays an essential role in maintaining ocular balance. In addition, it provides nutrients to important structures such as the cornea and the lens, which lack blood vessels.

First, aqueous humor is produced by the ciliary bodies, which are located behind the iris. These specialized tissues continuously secrete the fluid. Afterward, the aqueous humor accumulates in the posterior chamber of the eye, which lies between the iris and the lens.

Next, the fluid flows through the pupil into the anterior chamber, the space located between the cornea and the iris. In this way, aqueous humor circulates through the front part of the eye while delivering nutrients and removing metabolic waste from ocular tissues.

During this process, aqueous humor also helps maintain intraocular pressure. This pressure is necessary to preserve the shape of the eyeball and ensure proper visual function. Therefore, a balance between aqueous humor production and drainage is essential.

After circulating through the anterior chamber, the fluid must leave the eye. Primarily, drainage occurs through the trabecular meshwork, a filtration structure located at the angle between the cornea and the iris.

Once filtered, the fluid enters the canal of Schlemm, a circular channel surrounding the base of the cornea. Then, aqueous humor passes through collector channels that transport it into the venous system.

Finally, the fluid is absorbed into the bloodstream. As a result, the eye maintains a stable balance of pressure and nutrients.

When this drainage system works properly, intraocular pressure remains stable. However, if the outflow becomes restricted, eye pressure may increase.

Elevated intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve. Consequently, this condition may lead to glaucoma, a disease that can cause progressive vision loss.

Therefore, understanding normal aqueous humor drainage is essential in ophthalmology. It explains the balance of ocular fluids and supports the prevention of pressure-related eye diseases.
