Onychomycosis is the medical term that describes the fungal infection of the nails, a very prevalent condition in the adult population. This pathology occurs when various types of fungi, especially dermatophytes, colonize the nail tissue. Therefore, the structure of the nail undergoes profound alterations that affect both its aesthetics and its functionality. Patients usually notice initial changes in coloration, which vary from whitish to yellowish or brown tones. Due to this, the nail plate loses its natural transparency and acquires an opaque and neglected appearance.

In the first place, the progression of the infection leads to a significant thickening of the nail, a process known as pachyonychia. Likewise, the fungus degrades keratin, which causes the nail to become extremely fragile and brittle. For this reason, it is common to observe a shedding of cellular debris under the free edge of the nail. Consequently, footwear can generate painful pressure due to the increased nail volume. Furthermore, in advanced stages, the nail may become completely deformed or detach from the bed.

On the other hand, the warm and humid environment inside the footwear favors the uncontrolled growth of these microorganisms. For example, the use of non-breathable shoes and the lack of proper hygiene are determining risk factors. Therefore, the fungus finds an ideal environment to proliferate and spread to adjacent nails. Indeed, onychomycosis rarely heals spontaneously without a targeted medical intervention. Undoubtedly, an accurate diagnosis through a nail culture is essential to choose the correct antifungal agent.

Regarding treatment, options vary depending on the severity and the number of affected nails. On one hand, lacquers and topical solutions are useful in mild or superficial infections. Similarly, oral medications are necessary when the nail matrix is compromised by the fungus. However, these treatments are usually prolonged and require rigorous consistency on the part of the patient. In this way, the healthy nail is allowed to grow and gradually replace the infected tissue.

Finally, prevention is based on keeping the feet clean and strictly dry after bathing. For this reason, the use of natural fiber socks and ventilated footwear is an essential measure. In conclusion, onychomycosis is a persistent but treatable condition under specialized supervision. Only through compliance with the treatment and preventive habits is the recurrence of the infection avoided in the long term.
