The anatomy of the liver corresponds to one of the most important organs of the digestive system and body metabolism. First, the liver is located on the right side of the abdomen, just below the diaphragm, and is partially protected by the rib cage. Moreover, it is the largest internal organ in the human body.
The liver is divided into hepatic lobes, mainly the right lobe and the left lobe. In addition, anatomically, the quadrate lobe and the caudate lobe are also identified. These lobes are composed of millions of small functional units called hepatic lobules.
Inside these lobules are the liver cells, known as hepatocytes. These cells perform numerous essential functions for the body. For example, they participate in the metabolism of nutrients, including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Furthermore, hepatocytes are involved in detoxification processes, removing toxic substances, drugs, and waste products circulating in the blood. In this way, the liver helps maintain the body’s chemical balance.
The liver also produces bile, a digestive fluid stored in the gallbladder. Later, bile is released into the small intestine, where it helps digest fats.
Likewise, the liver participates in the storage of vitamins, minerals, and glycogen, which is a form of stored energy. Therefore, this organ plays a crucial role in maintaining body metabolism.
In addition, the liver receives blood through the hepatic artery and the hepatic portal vein, allowing it to process nutrients absorbed from the digestive system.
