This system is made up of several important organs. For example, it includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Each organ performs a specific role.
First, air enters through the nose or mouth. Then, it passes through the pharynx. After that, it continues to the larynx, which also contains the vocal cords.
Next, the air moves through the trachea. This tube has cartilage rings that keep the airway open. Therefore, air can travel easily toward the lungs.
Afterward, the trachea divides into two bronchi. Each bronchus enters a lung. Then, these tubes branch into smaller bronchioles.
Finally, the air reaches the alveoli. These tiny air sacs allow gas exchange. At this stage, oxygen moves into the blood.
Meanwhile, carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the lungs. Then, this gas leaves the body during exhalation.
Furthermore, the respiratory system works with the circulatory system. In this way, blood transports oxygen to every body cell.
Therefore, this system is essential for life. Without oxygen, cells cannot produce energy.
