The canal of Schlemm is a key structure in the drainage system of the eye. It is located at the angle of the anterior chamber, where the cornea meets the iris. In addition, this canal plays a major role in regulating intraocular pressure by allowing aqueous humor to leave the eye.

First, aqueous humor is a transparent fluid produced by the ciliary bodies. This fluid circulates in the anterior portion of the eye and performs several essential functions. For example, it provides nutrients and oxygen to avascular structures such as the cornea and the lens. Furthermore, it helps maintain the shape and stability of the eyeball.

After being produced, aqueous humor flows from the posterior chamber through the pupil into the anterior chamber. Then, the fluid circulates between the cornea and the iris, where it nourishes tissues and removes metabolic waste.

To maintain proper intraocular pressure, aqueous humor must be continuously drained. Primarily, drainage occurs through the trabecular meshwork, a filtration tissue located at the iridocorneal angle.

Once filtered, the fluid enters the canal of Schlemm, a circular channel surrounding the base of the cornea. Next, aqueous humor flows through collector channels that carry it into the venous drainage system.

Through this drainage process, intraocular pressure remains balanced. However, if the outflow becomes restricted or blocked, pressure inside the eye may increase.

Elevated intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve. As a result, this condition is associated with glaucoma, a disease that may lead to progressive vision loss.

Therefore, understanding the canal of Schlemm is essential in ophthalmology. It helps explain the mechanism of aqueous humor drainage and its importance in maintaining ocular health.
