The human visual system is the network of structures responsible for detecting light and transforming it into images interpreted by the brain. This system includes the eye, the optic nerve, and several areas of the brain, particularly the visual cortex. In addition, these structures work together to allow the perception of colors, shapes, depth, and motion.

First, the visual process begins when light enters the eye through the cornea, a transparent structure located at the front of the eyeball. The cornea allows light to pass into the eye and contributes to the initial focusing of incoming light.

Next, the light passes through the pupil, which is the opening located in the center of the iris. The iris regulates the size of the pupil and controls the amount of light entering the eye. In this way, the visual system can adapt to different lighting conditions.

Afterward, light travels through the lens, a flexible structure that focuses the light onto the retina. The retina is a light-sensitive layer located at the back of the eye. In this region, specialized photoreceptor cells known as rods and cones are found.

These photoreceptors convert light energy into electrical signals. Furthermore, cones allow color perception and detailed vision, while rods support vision in low-light conditions.

Once generated, these signals travel through the optic nerve, which connects the retina to the brain.

The signals then reach the visual cortex, located in the occipital lobe of the brain. There, the brain processes the information and reconstructs the visual image.

Through this complex process, the visual system enables humans to perceive the surrounding environment. As a result, we can recognize objects, detect movement, and distinguish colors and shapes.

Therefore, the visual system represents one of the most sophisticated sensory systems in the human body. Understanding its function is essential for studying vision and diagnosing visual disorders.
